‘Caffeine:’ fairy-tale musical for drama fans

For fans of syrupy love-themed Korean dramas, your dream musical is here once again.

Set in an intimate 359-seat hall, packed with humor and armed with a charismatic cast, “Caffeine” is set for another successful run on its hands, its third in two years.

Odd beverage-themed analogies, overly quick narrative jumps and forgettable opening numbers notwithstanding, the work makes it to the end in one piece, thanks to the easy-to-understand plot and the onstage couple’s inspired acting, singing and chemistry. The result is a light-hearted movie-like spectacle, an entertaining experience to be sure but without lasting impact.

FIT CHALLENGE: Wessels down 16.6 lbs

Posted by admin on February 6th, 2012

Wowhellip;. I cant believe that Im finishing up the first month of the FIT Challenge. 16.6 pounds. That number is hard to fathom. While I dont know if I will be able to lose weight at that rate throughout the challenge, Im truly excited about my start.

I had an email from my mom asking how much my kids weighed when they were born. It caught me off guard, but I figured out that she was trying to relate to me something close to being equal to my initial weight loss.

On Friday, I visited the Register building to get my pictures taken for the one-month update. Surprisingly, the paper moved its photo studio down from the 37th floor.

Following the photos, I got the opportunity...

Fruit juice flavored seltzer is nothing to sneeze at

Posted by admin on February 6th, 2012

This column didnt get its start at the game table per usual — though thats where the interesting conversation got going. It began at a birthday party after a mom served fruit juice flavored seltzer water. One childs dad poked fun at the mom in earshot of a few of the ladies-who-game.

He said something along the lines of the mom being nature-freak, (who even uses that term any more?), and added it was silly considering she served cake and ice cream.

This mom, lets call her Jenn, made the cake with healthier ingredients and served ice cream sans unnecessary chemicals. Without going on ad nauseam into her practices, she is a thoughtful woman, who buys the least unadulterated...

Regulate sugar like booze and cigarettes? Maybe

Posted by admin on February 5th, 2012

They say lets get taxes in place on foods high in sugar. Lets restrict places where you can buy sugar-laden food like non-diet sodas, candy and snack foods. Lets restrict advertising to kids that encourages them to eat foods and drinks high in sugar content. Lets even yank sugary foods off the list of products that can be bought with food stamps or served in school lunch programs.

Are they on the right track? Partly.

These proposals treat each of us as rational agents who can make better choices about what we eat. If sugary food costs more and is harder to find, we will choose to eat less of it.

Let the public know that sugar is ubiquitous, present in many foods youd never...

By the time Lifetime stepped up to renew AMW as a weekly show, Turchin was already ticketed for WPLG, which he rejoined in July.

Calories be darned, my favorite meal is

Mickey Ds. I am a McDonalds addict. Give me a Big Mac or Quarter Pounder with cheese and I am in heaven. Dont dare forget the french fries. Heres the kick: I always down all this with a Diet Coke. What can I say, I grew up with three women. Ionlydrink diet sodas.

Something about me people would be surprised to know is

I love to shop. I have way more patience than most women, including my wife. Im not a bargain shopper but I know one when I see one. I could spend an entire day in a mall.

Drinking diet soda daily could boost risk for stroke or heart attack

Posted by admin on February 4th, 2012

If you imbibe diet soda daily, a new study announced on Tuesday warns that you could be at increased risk of a stroke or heart attack.

Data were analyzed from 2,564 participants in the NIH-funded Northern Manhattan Study, with researchers examining how often individuals drank soft drinks — diet and regular — and the number of strokes and heart attacks that occurred over a 10-year period.

They found that those who drank diet soft drinks daily were 43 percent more likely to have suffered heart attacks or strokes than those who drank none. Light diet soft drink users, meaning those who drank between one a month and six a week, and those who chose regular soft drinks...
